MK Sports Programming

Sports Performance

Our Sports Performance Program strives to develop and deliver high-performance sports to Mi’kmaw Communities. Utilizing a holistic approach that encompasses all aspects of a strong development program, we look to connect athletes to knowledgeable and experienced experts in their sport, mental performance, nutrition, strength, and conditioning, all while ensuring culture and language continue to be incorporated at every step.

This program works with outside organizations to build these programs in the community while increasing access, inclusivity, and diversity within the mainstream sports system. Our Sport Performance Coordinators work with Provincial Sports Organizations (PSO), Canadian Sports Institution Atlantic, Sport Nova Scotia, and many others to ensure Indigenous athletes the best possible experience across both Indigenous and mainstream sports streams, aiming to reach excellence on and off the field of play.

The Sport Performance program includes coach development, athlete development, Team Mi’kmaw Nova Scotia with the North American Indigenous Games, Team Atlantic with the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships, and other high-performance programming throughout a wide range of sports.

Team Mi’kmaw Nova Scotia competes at the North American Indigenous Games which takes place every 4 years. This upcoming NAIG Games will be hosted in July 2027 in Calgary, Alberta. Please keep an eye on our website and social media pages for upcoming announcements on TMNS. Any Questions Regarding NAIG please contact Mi’kmaw Sports Performance Coordinator, Ayden Pierro, ayden@kinu.ca

National Aboriginal Hockey Championships

The National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC) is an annual event providing a forum for elite Indigenous hockey players across Canada. The tournament attracts participation from First Nations, Inuit and Metis across thirteen provinces and territories. Two teams; one male and one female are selected and representative of each province and territory. Players are 13-17 years of age (U15, U18). Team Atlantic is composed of athletes from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland & Labrador. The NAHC also helps foster cultural unity and pride and celebrates the athletic abilities of Indigenous athletes nationwide. The upcoming NAHC is taking place in BC in May 2025

Any questions regarding NAHC please contact Mi’kmaw Sport Development Coordinator, Khayla Laing Khayla@kinu.ca.
