Lauretta Welsh received her BBA from Acadia University in 1986, her CPA designation in 1996, and herCHRP designation in 2014. In 2016 Lauretta successfully obtained a certificate in “Leading People and Investing to Build Sustainable Communities” from Harvard Business School. She is the Director of Finance and Planning for Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey, a position which she has held for 25 years. Lauretta was instrumental to the successful negotiation of the education self-government agreement between the Federal Government, the Provincial Government, and 12 first nation communities in Nova Scotia. Through her financial leadership Lauretta has played a key role in increasing the revenues of the organization from $800K to over the $66 million mark and increasing the number of full time employee from 9 to 34. The success of Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey has been recognized both at the national and international level.
Lauretta oversaw all aspects of the HR and strategic and operational planning functions from 1996 to2016. From 1996 to present Lauretta oversaw the budgeting, financial accounting and reporting activities for Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey. Furthermore, in her role as Director of Finance and Planning, Lauretta has represented her organization on several committees at the national, provincial, and local government level. Lauretta is the past co-chair of the Nova Scotia, Canada, and First Nation Planning and PrioritiesCommittee. Lauretta also represented her organization as a member of the Nova Scotia Minister ofEducation Transition Task Force.
Prior to joining Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey Lauretta occupied roles of increasing responsibilities within the accounting and planning sectors with the Federal Government over a ten year period.
