Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey, in partnership with Apprenticeship NS, Nova Scotia Construction Sector Council and Skills Canada, was able to offer a 2-day carpentry camp at LSK school. It was open to 10 students from the community of Sipekne'katik aged 12-15.
Day one consisted of the students taking part in an essentials skills workshop in the morning. The students really enjoyed having a chance to play some games and learn about why the things that they already know how to do, such as communication and teamwork are considered essential skills. This was followed by a safety orientation and then some time in the shop. During the remainder of the camp they had the opportunity to use the tools in the wood shop and built some bee boxes from start to finish.
They were very conscientious while working with the tools and followed all of the safety rules at all times. They were a great group of students to have and worked hard to complete their projects! Huge thank you to all of our partners and camp instructors!
