Wellness
Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey Trauma Informed Lead Team have been working to develop their trauma informed toolkits to collectively build trauma informed schools within our MK communities.
They completed their Trauma Sensitive Level 1 Mindfulness Training on October 23rd. The training was delivered over two weekends by Breathing Space; Jenny Kierstead & Blair Abbass organized by our Wellness Consultant Rebecca Scirocco.
Breathing Spaces describes the meaning behind this training as
-To establish a foundational understanding of the causes, symptoms and language of trauma.
-To Learn how to relate to others in a trauma-sensitive fashion.
-To explore trauma-sensitive approaches to mindfulness (and movement) with the intent of reducing distress, improving quality of life, enriching social connections and maybe even save lives.
Elementary Math
Elementary math has been very busy organizing and planning as well as visiting schools providing support and materials. Kindergarten classrooms in Eskasoni loved the Inukshuk hopscotch which can be used indoors and outdoors to explore some numeracy activities.
As part of early numeracy project the Eskasoni Immersion school had one room/space painted to incorporate nature and culture. The early years math curriculum explores so much numeracy in nature and through visual representations.
Kyla Bernard, Elementary Numeracy Consultant was able to visit Bear River and they are so grateful for the support from MK to help replenish the material and resources they need to begin the new school year. Kyla also co-presented at the provincial math conference in Bedford on October 28. Teachers from Paqtnkek attended the math conference as well.
