The North American Indigenous Games were held in Halifax this summer. It was an amazing week filled with athletic success and cultural activities. The sporting events were held in 21 venues, two of which were located in Millbrook and Sipekne'katik. There were over 5000 athletes in attendance and our team finished with at total of 35 medals.
The staff at MK spent the week volunteering to support the games in many different ways. Some worked with the team itself while others helped out with the cultural village, transportation, logistics, or anything else that was required. One of the events our staff was instrumental in coordinating was the first ever Waltes world championship.
It was a busy week for everyone involved but the youth had the time of their lives. They were so proud to be part of the host province and represented their communities and families in the most respectful way. We were very proud to be selected as the recipient of the John Fletcher Spirit Award winner for NAIG 2023!
The John Fletcher Spirit Award is presented to the contingent that demonstrates the spirit of teamwork, fair play, respect and integrity throughout the NAIG competition week. This will be decided through a voting process. The NAIG philosophy is demonstrated by the spirit – strong, brave and true, which is built upon values such as integrity, respect and sharing.
The John Fletcher Award is an honour of one of the founding members of the North American Indigenous Games. It is a tribute to his commitment to the principles of these Games and has the blessings of his family in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. This award is presented to the contingent whose members best exemplify these ideals at the closing ceremonies of each NAIG.
The next NAIG will be held in Calgary in 2027.
