The Department of Canadian Heritage offers funding through the Indigenous Languages Component. This year, the ILC selection committee for Nova Scotia set aside $50 000 to be used on Mi'kmaq youth project proposals.
The selection committee wanted to give youth the opportunity to get involved in language reclamation and revitalization in innovative and exciting ways. They believe that the youth have ideas that will work for their peers and get people excited about using the language.
This opportunity was open to youth who are currently in K-12 classes across the province. They were asked to submit a simple proposal outlining the idea for their project, along with a budget for their planned activities.
The committee was very excited to see the proposals that were submitted and everyone is really looking forward to hearing more about the success of the projects after they are completed.
Here is a list of the youth projects that will be taking place this spring:
Mi'kmaw students from North Nova Education Centre - Interactive Language Wall
PLFN youth - Youth Language Classes
WMS youth Students:Trent Simon and Jocelyn Gould - Waltes Tournament
Grades 5-8 Pictou Landing leadership group - Cultural activities (Leather Work, Trapping, Fishing, etc.)
Colton Marshall - Potlotek Games Night
Madyson Caines - Mi'kmaw Name Plates and Posters
