Mi'kmaw Language and Culture Department
We had such a fabulous weekend with the group of educators who joined us for our Mi’kmaw Language weekend in Debert. We had land-based and classroom language lessons, games, great food and a whole lot of fun!
The Red Road Cultural Camp was held this month in Debert. The students took part in many talking circles and ceremonies which offered them the opportunity to connect with each other and their spiritual side. They also made crafts and spent time listening to stories told by the elders in attendance. They had a fantastic weekend.
Sports and Rec
Multi-Sport Camps
Our Sport for Social Development Coordinator Jasmine Collins put on some multi-sport camps for the youth in the mainland communities this month. The youth had a great time taking part in a variety of activities such as Lacrosse, Curling, Volleyball and much more.
Academic Services
Our Autism Teacher Specialist and Student Services Consultant provided some Professional Development at Pictou Landing school this month. They introduced the educators to Multi Tiered System of Supports and Universal Design for Learning (MTSS and UDL).
MTSS is a framework, it's a collaborative approach including students, teachers, support staff, administration, parents/guardians & outside agencies and works to provide appropriate programming, settings, supports, and services. MTSS includes nurturing the learner in all aspects including learning needs, social and emotional well being and academic. UDL is one approach that can be used under the MTSS framework. UDL addresses learning needs of all students in an inclusive classroom. With UDL, inclusion, accessibility, and flexibility is purposefully built into all aspects of education from the beginning. Barriers don't need to be worked around because they don't exist in the first place. Access to the curriculum is inherently available to all so everyone benefits.
After learning about MTSS and UDL, teachers got to choose from a variety of materials to design their own UDL classrooms.
