On the weekend of October 20th, we hosted a Principal's Retreat to give our Principals an opportunity to take part in some professional and cultural learning opportunities. We realize that our Principals from all of our communities spend a lot of time trying to coordinate the day-to -day running of their schools and they don't often get a chance to take part in the many activities that are taking place within their schools.
Some of our Principals have been working in their position for many years and have a routine established, where others are new to their position and schools and are just beginning to get comfortable in their new role. We wanted to provide all of them with a fun, relaxing weekend where they were able to collaborate with each other and focus on the supports they need to achieve their goals, whatever they may be.
The weekend involved craft sessions where the principals made their own drums and quillwork art. They also took part in team building and networking sessions with Joanne Tompkins. "I often get to participate as a facilitator but not a participant," said Newell Johnson, Principal at ABMHS. "I really loved having the opportunity to actually take part instead of teach." Her thoughts were echoed by all of the other principals as they all said they really enjoyed having the opportunity to learn, and rest. There are plans to continue to offer this opportunity each year.
