This month we hosted a Red Road Youth Camp in Southwest Nova Scotia. About 20 youth joined us for a weekend filled with cultural activities and ceremony at the Mersey River Chalets which is about 5 km from Kejimkujik National Park.
The weekend began with a pipe ceremony offered by Grandmothers Jane Meader and Lottie Johnson, Paulina Meader and Elder Lawrence Wells. This was followed by a fun evening of Waltes facilitated by Sugar and Cindy Poulette. The Waltes tournament winner was Lilly-Beth Fisher who beat out Eriksyn Sylliboy who took second place.
On day 2 the students had an opportunity to take part in various activites such as a medicine walk with Joe and Judy Googoo, basket making with Lynne and Hope Battiste, Sacred Fire teachings with Grandmother Marilyn Francis and Zacc Paul, and a naming ceremony with Grandmothers, Jane Meader and Lottie Johnson, and Paulina Meader.
The weekend ended on Sunday with a closing circle. Everyone had a fantastic weekend and we can't wait to do it again soon.
