Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey hosts 10th annual Indigenous Youth Skilled Trades Fair

October 30, 2024

Approximately 70 Mi’kmaw high school students from across the province of Nova Scotia attended the 10th annual Nova Scotia Indigenous Youth Skilled Trades Fair in Halifax this month. Over three days, students explored many different skilled trades and learned about their apprenticeship processes, funding, education and training opportunities.

Students visited experiential skilled trades booths and spoke one-on-one with skilled tradespeople working in their respective fields. They learned about a typical workday on-the-job, and the necessary education and work experience that are required to get into each field of work.

They also had the opportunity to visit the Mainland Nova Scotia Building Trades centre where they explored other trades and learned about the necessary skills that they already have which are important to every field of work.

The trades fair also offered some evening activities for the youth which included cultural teachings, wellness activities and fun.

We had a fantastic group of youth this year and we are looking forward to offering the event again next year!
