With Mi'kmaw being declared the original language of the province of Nova Scotia two years ago, many requests for translation have been arising. The current team of translators wanted to ensure that they not only have support for their immediate projects but that they also have people who are able to take over the work once they retire. Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey offered to help support them by coordinating a translation mentorship program.
The program kicked off this month with 10 apprentices working with 5 Translators who will meet every two weeks for 10 sessions. During each session the participants will be given work to translate that they will take home with them to work on independently. When they come together they will review their translations, learn from their mistakes and receive guidance from the experts on how they would phrase things and where they can find resources such as Rand Dictionary, Lexicon, or the Facebook Group Nklusuaqnminal.
This is just the beginning of a trial program. The hope is that we continue to offer this mentorship for years to come. The main goal is to be able to have more translators who can support our current translators so that they feel less overwhelmed with the amount of work coming their way.
So far the initial meeting was a success and the new apprentices are very excited to take on the work and learn from the best!
