This summer, students were given the opportunity to take part in a new camp. The Marine Emergency Duties(MED) and Domestic Vessel Safety(DVS)camp, which was held at NSCC Strait Area Campus, is designed to provide first time seafarers with the minimum knowledge of emergency response required to safely work aboard a vessel; to determine the hazards associated with the marine environment and their own vessel, and how to prevent shipboard incidents including fire.
The camp ran from July 12-15 for students from the ages of 15-19. The first 3 days of the camp were dedicated to the MED and DVS training. The final day was an introduction to Core Marine Programming and careers in theMarine Industry. Students were introduced to state-of-the-art simulation equipment for navigation and engine room training.
The program consisted of a mix of in-class learning and hands-on activities. Students were on campus daily from 8:30 – 4:30 and spent their evenings in Dundee swimming or kayaking. They also spent one evening with Terry and Luke Denny listening to stories around a fire.
At the end of the camp, all students received their Transport Canada Certificate.
