Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey hosted the L'nuo'ltimk - Language, Culture & Mi’kmaw Ways of Knowing & Being professional development day this month. Teachers from across the province gathered in Membertou for a day filled with language and cultural teachings.
The day started with a keynote address from Serena Francis. She spoke about Wampun Belts and the history behind them. She shared photos of some of the historical belts in Mi'kmaki and spoke about their meaning and the images. She also brought some of the beautiful wampum belts she has created and shared the story of what they represent.
The educators spent the remainder of the day taking part in workshops on everything from storytelling, land-based learning, Etuaptmumk, Mi'kmaw song and dance, and crafts. It was a fantastic day and all of the educators really enjoyed taking part in all of the learning experiences that were offered.
We invited a panel of youth to join us during the lunch hour to talk about their experiences as language learners and ambassadors. They spoke about the things that the educators in their lives did to encourage and progress their language learning. Their words were so powerful and we really appreciated being able to hear from them.
Of course, we gave away some amazing door prizes at the end of the day to show our appreciation for the participation and engagement shown by all of our wonderful educators.
