Family Literacy Day at Pictou Landing School
It is a tradition at Pictou Landing School to invite families to come for breakfast in celebration of Family Literacy Day each year. The pandemic prevented us from doing this over the past few years, but we got together this year and had a wonderful breakfast, and literacy-themed activities. This year we asked parents to think about the books they loved to read as children and to bring them in to share with us or to tell us about them. Our students were also proud to read with their parents in their classrooms and in the school learning commons. For fun and some physical activity, we also got together in the gym and had a Student VS Parent/Teacher Tug of War.
Monthly Exploratories
Each month we choose a day to have 2 hours in the morning devoted to multi-age exploratories for our students. Staff teams create and lead the exploratories, and groups of students can choose which one to participate in. For January we had the following choices: Waltes, Painting, Floor Hockey, Mazes with Dots & Dash, Cultural Storytelling, and Eco Brick Making, which are old pop bottles stuffed with candy wrappers that can be made into structures while keeping waste out of the landfill..
Feeding Apuknajit
On January 31st we went outside together to feed Apuknajit in a ceremony that we do each year.
