February 2025 Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey Department Updates

February 24, 2025

Students at STFX had an opportunity to participate in a Ji'kmaqn workshop this month. Our Adult Education Consultant Melissa Reid coordinated the workshop that was facilitated by Michael R Denny. There was a great turnout and the students really enjoyed themselves.

On January 31st, Ambrah MacNeil, Autism Teacher Specialist offered training to EAs at LSK in Sipekne’kati. They learned about work systems and how they can help the students they work with in ways that can meet their learning styles. Work systems provide a way of structuring activities to support students in understanding:

What work?

How much work?

Concept of finished and

What happens next?

The goal of using work systems is to foster independence in our learners. Staff spent the afternoon creating 32 work systems and activities! It was a great day of learning, sharing and creating resources to help enrich the learning experiences of students.

Elementary Numeracy

Our Numeracy Consultant Kyla Bernard held a Professional Development opportunity at the end of January called Engaging Math - Learning Through Play and 25 teachers attended the session.

One of the programs that Kyla has introduced in all of our schools is IXL which is a platform that allows teachers and learners to create and share customized study materials, from matching games to flashcards, quizzes and more. The students and teachers have been engaged in using IXL since September and many skills have been practiced in all math strands. Over 500 students are using the site and have their own accounts. Over 98000 math questions and some ELA questions have been practiced.

Some very exciting news is that Kyla created a new math website for all educators in MK to have access to. In this website you will find resources for planning, and supporting math in the elementary grades as well as games, videos, interactive math manipulatives and much more. She will be presenting this new site at the annual Strategic Planning Symposium and if anyone has any questions on the site, please reach out to Kyla - kyla@kinu.ca.
