Mi'kmaw Language and Culture

We had a successful Mi’kmaw Language Educators Networking day on Saturday, February 17, 2024.  Our very own Beverly Jeddore led the morning with a refresher on how to use her Animate/Inanimate flash cards to teach language.  The participants were appreciative of learning a new way to use this valuable resource.  We also had a sharing circle and Charlotte Poulette of We’koqma’q shared an online application she uses with her students to help with learning language.  Everyone enjoyed the spirit of competition with her material.  For the afternoon, we enjoyed a craft session with painting on canvas, there were so many diverse interpretations on their work and each person were proud to show their artwork.  We have scheduled our next Networking day for Saturday, March 23, 2024, place to be determined later.

Treaty Education

The Treaty Education team held a professional development session this month. Teachers from across the province had the opportunity to discuss best practices and learn about the resources available to teach treaty education in Junior high and High School classrooms.

Academic Services

Student Services delivered a full day of professional learning and self care to Student Program Assistants (SPAS) in We'koqma'q on Tuesday, February 20th. Ambrah MacNeil (Autism Teacher Specialist) delivered a presentation on Sensory Processing and made make-and-takes along with sensory kits for their students. To end the session, a review of the importance of Self-Care was presented followed by chair yoga and meditation led by Student Services Consultant, Doreen Stevens.

Student Services also delivered 6 online (Hybrid) PD modules for EA's since September. The Modules were entirely developed by Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey. The Modules are a Pilot Project to provide professional development for student support in MK Family of Schools. Over 60 EA's have completed all 6 Modules and after review and evaluation of the Pilot Project, we hope to offer more professional learning opportunities. Congratulations to the EA's who committed their time and hard work to complete all the modules. We are proud of you and value your commitment.

Elementary mathematics

Kyla Bernard, Elementary Numeracy Consultant has been visiting a few schools this month and had some great opportunities to sit with students and share some fun math centers and using technology to explore mathematics. She loves hearing students say they love math and their excitement when they finally understand a concept!
