February 2022 Academic Services Department Highlights

March 1, 2022

Elementary Numeracy

February has been a good Month for Elementary Numeracy.  Eleven Elementary teachers from Eskasoni Elementary Middle School are working on a Professional Development workshop all month with Graham Fletcher. The PD is called Foundations for Numerical Reasoning K-3.   The teachers each get a certificate of participation after completion of the 6 MODULES.  Total time to complete workshop is 2.5 days.

There has been great feedback from the teachers who are enjoying the PD and the flexibility of timing of when to participate.  "Covid really changed how professional development can be done so I am excited to allow teachers to participate in a more manageable way", said Kyla Bernard, Elementary Numeracy Consultant.

Kyla is also happy to share that as part of the Elementary Numeracy Math Program, she has 17 Waltes games that will be sent to every school in MK and spread out in the elementary classrooms.  She is sending a huge thank you to Danny Paul from Membertou who created each set.  He was great at sharing his craftsmanship, knowledge and wisdom.  He has dedicated so much time and effort creating each piece for the students to enjoy.  We are hoping to send them out by the end of March.

Elementary Literacy

Books and materials are almost all in! Ten teachers from our MK schools will be receiving their library in the classroom in the month of February 2022. Each teacher added many wonderful Indigenous/content/student interest books and materials for their classroom.

A professional development day was held in Paqtnkek Education Centre on February 25th. Teachers were interested to learn about the new guided reading collections for their school. We touched on guided reading and other assessments to help guide their instruction within the classroom.
