On December 1st 10 MK teachers from across Nova Scotia travelled to the Discovery Center in Halifax to learn about the new teaching tool/game available, “Naqa’te’n ksukwaqn” or “Why immunize” from Jen Sawlor, MK STEM Consultant and Andrew Howe and Jillian Phillips from the Discovery Centre.
This tool is designed to be played as a series of interactive games to teach students about germs, hand washing, immunization and the importance of not spreading misinformation. It applies to all grade levels and can be used and adapted by teachers covering a range of subjects.
The teachers also learned about good and bad bacteria and viruses, reviewed microscope use and observed live bacteria using a variety of microscopes.
All teachers who attended went home with a fully stocked kit which included the game board, supportive materials and links to a website offering ideas and adaptations for all grade levels.
