Marie Battiste facilitated a workshop focussing on Deconstructing Eurocentric Colonialism and Decolonizing Indigenous Education with our community Education Directors and Principals this month.
The conversation began by discussing the difficulty of identify colonialism in our system when many of our people have been educated in a colonial system. Directors are aware of these issues and are beginning the work of addressing them within their communities in a gentle way. We discussed the importance of valuing the spirit of all learners and visioning what we want to see in a collective system to unite all communities. We also focussed on the next steps and how to unpack our collective trauma in order to move forward as a nation. This session was the first of many and work is only at the beginning stages. We will continue to plan and work to develop curriculum that aligns with our Mi'kmaq values and ensures success.
We invited a graphic illustrator in to record the session and the results were absolutely beautiful!
