January 31, 2022
On January 24th, 2022, an online celebration was held for the The Sheelagh Nolan Award for Excellence in Teaching. This is the 14th year for these awards and we are so proud that this year's recipient comes from one of our community schools. We would like to extend a huge congratulations to Joanne Alex, Director of Education in We'koqma'q.
The Sheelagh Nolan Award for Excellence in Teaching is a prestigious award that honours the devotion and perseverance of the late Sheelagh Nolan. Sheelagh was an active contributor to numerous school and community causes. Sheelagh’s son, Patrick, is on the Autism Spectrum and was always Sheelagh’s greatest inspiration. With this award, we celebrate her legacy of support and her championing of excellence in education.
Joanne has had a passion for working with students with Autism from the moment she began working in the classroom. She has been an advocate for students and has worked with teachers to help them understand the importance of meeting students where they are to help them grow. She has led all of her fellow educators to see the gifts that children with Autism bring to the world.
Congratulations Joanne. We are so proud of you!
