The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), located on the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) campus, hosted the first week long Indigenous Vet Camp this summer. The camp was a pilot project coordinated in partnership with the Post Secondary department at MK and the AVC.
The camp, held from August 5 - 9, offered 5 days of hands-on activities to the nearly 40 students from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. The students took part in everything from learning about domestic animal health to farm and wild animals as well. The goal was to ignite a passion for veterinary medicine among Indigenous youth.
While away for the camp, the students also had an opportunity to check out some tourist attractions such as Sandspit and Shining Waters. One of the favourite activities for the group was going to a farm called Orwell Corner Historic Village, where they interacted with the animals and explored what life was like in a small Prince Edward Island agricultural crossroads in the 1890s.
The camp was a huge success and the students who attended were very engaged and respectful. There are plans to offer this camp annually.
