2024 Waltes World Championship hosted in Millbrook

September 27, 2024

The 2024 Waltes World Championship was hosted in the community of Millbrook on July 11 and 12. This was the second year that the championship was held, with the inaugural tournament taking place during NAIG in 2023 in Jipuktuk.

Each community was able to send one participant, with the exception of the two largest communities of Eskasoni and Sipekne'katik who sent two. Communities hosted their own tournaments to decide on their representative for the Championship tournament.

On day one of the tournament, names were drawn and each participant played a best of 3 round against the drawn opponent. The winners of each round went to the winners bracket. It was a double knockout tournament so participants had the opportunity to continue to play until they lost twice. After day one of competition, we were down to 6 participants remaining.

On day 2, Molly and Fran remained on the A bracket. On the B side oiur competitors were Brock vs Betty and Nicole vs Michelle R.

The games were very competitive during day 2, with most matches going all 3 games. In the end we were down to our 3 finalists. Each of the finalists received a Waltes shadow boxes made by Joe Googoo. The first place winner received a Waltes board made by Chad Denny and a medallion made by Jocelyn Marshall.

We had an amazing time over the 2 day event and we want to thank everyone for coming out and those who helped in any way. We are extremely grateful for our counters for their work during the event and we want to extend a huge congratulations to our winners!
