Laurianne Sylvester is the Director of Academic Services from Membertou. Laurianne has worked as an elementary teacher and Vice-Principal in her community school in Membertou after graduating from St. Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Education. She has held her current position as Director of Academic Services at Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey (MK) for over 10 years. She joined MK initially as a School Improvement Coordinator two years prior to her Directorship. Laurianne is currently working on a second Masters in Leadership in Education through Acadia University. Her first Masters is in Curriculum and Diverse Learners through Mount St. Vincent University (MSVU). Laurianne is passionate about Mi’kmaw ways of knowing and being and how to incorporate Mi’kmaw perspective into the learning. Laurianne participates on many boards including the MK Board of Directors, Unama’ki College Advisory Board (Cape Breton University), and MSVU Board of Governors. Along with many of the education committees that Laurianne is part of, both provincially and nationally, she is also a volunteer with Cape Breton Regional Hospital (Palliative Care and a “PartyLine” representative on CBC Radio’s Information Morning. Laurianne is a proud mother to Kalo and an “over the moon” proud Kiju to Kylo. Laurianne spends a lot of her leisure time with family, friends, and her partner Elliott.
