Biography:

Hello my name is Janean Marshall and I am the Student Services Consultant with Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey since 2012.

I was born in Massachusetts and am proud to call Eskasoni First Nation my home. I reside there with my husband Tex and our unique sons Geordy, Lennox and Kolton. They like so many youth truly make us better humans. Being of Italian and Mi’kmaq descent Family, community, language and connection is extremely important to me. I have been in education for over 18 years. I began my career as a Jr High Teacher at Eskasoni Elementary and Middle School. In 2012 I joined Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey as the Student Services Consultant. I am also a part time professor for Saint Francis Xavier University in the area of social justice and inclusive leadership.

In my present role as Student Services Consultant for Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey I works closely with schools to provide support in the area of special education. For me Inclusion in a Mi’kmaw context is about seeing the child first, their family and community in a holistic manner. It is about seeing the light in a child and helping them be proud of who they are where they come from as well reaching their best potential. Being in an Inclusive leader is my life work as the Creator blessed us with a child who sees the world in a unique way with his Autism. My poignant perspective both as an educator and a parent of child with Autism allows her to work with communities in quite a unique manner.

Over the past 6 years MK and myself have worked with Breathing Space’s Blair Abbass, Jenny Keirstead and Catherine Rahey to bring Yoga to the MK family of schools and communities. Presently there are over 40 teachers that have completed their 200Hr YTT (Yoga Teacher Training). Yoga has helped and continues to help our students feel more grounded in who they are and where they come from one breath at a time.

Janean currently possesses an BA (CBU), BEd. (STXU), MEd. in Leadership and administration also from STXU and an MEd. in supporting diverse learners with MSVU. In addition to being certified in a variety of Autism related programs such as PEERS, PECS, TEACCH, STAR. Janean herself is a Yogi with over 500 hours of training. At the end of the day its always about trying to take a breath and finding the balance. In terms of hobbies and interests she loves to sew and has created a small sewing company called Sew Bears as a tribute to giving back to communities for salites, school fundraisers. Sew Bears was a name her children created as she is the mother to her three Muin or bear clan children.
