Giselle Stevens is from Eskasoni First Nation. She is the proud wife of Clayton (Magoo) Stevens, and together they have three children. Giselle is passionate about the Mi’kmaw Language, and it shows because her children are fluent Mi’kmaw Speakers. Her two oldest graduated from the Mi’kmaw Immersion Program and both were awarded as “Top Mi’kmaw Speaker” while the youngest is currently enrolled at the Immersion School. She is extremely proud of her children and believes the language will be passed down for generations to come.
Giselle Stevens has worked with Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey since 2018. She began working at the Mi’kmaw Language and Treaty Education Assistant but later became the Mi’kmaw Language Coordinator. Giselle has always had a passion for Culture and Language. She worked with the Eskasoni Cultural Journeys for 5 years where she was the tour guide and met people from around the world. She was able to share the beautiful Mi’kmaw Language and Culture to others before she wanted to further her education. Giselle obtained her Bachelor of Arts from Cape Breton University in 2015 and went on to complete her Bachelor of Education at STFX in 2017. She worked with the Eskasoni School Board as a Grade 1 Teacher for 1 Term before she moved to Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey.
As a Mi’kmaw Language Coordinator, Giselle is able to help deliver resources to Language teachers, students and community members throughout Nova Scotia. Giselle also hosts Networking Sessions to ensure that the Mi’kmaw Teachers are up to date on resources and Professional Development. Her biggest inspiration are youths, which is why she started the Junior Mentor Apprentice program where students help students with the Language. It is currently a new program which she believes will later help students achieve their goals with Mi’kmaw speaking. Giselle takes pride in organizing and being involved with the MK Elder Advisory committee where she gets to consult and gather information from Elders throughout Mi’kma’ki.
Giselle loves to spend time with her husband and children. Her favorite time of the year is July where she gets to go camping on the Mniku during mission. She also loves to play cards especially 45 & 75. She also loves watching her kids play sports such as hockey, baseball and basketball.
