Introducing our New Staff

Over the past year, our team at Mi’kmaw Kina’matnwey has been growing. We would like to take the opportunity over the next few months to introduce our new staff and let everyone know who they are and what they can do to support our communities.

Kyla Bernard

Kyla Bernard was recently hired as our Elementary Numeracy Consultant/Coach. Kyla has been working with MK on secondment for 5 years, but has recently been hired as one of our full time staff members! 

Kyla has her Bachelor of Education and also her Masters in Leadership in Indigenous Education (Focus Research – How do students engage in cultural approaches to mathematics.) She has worked in Education since 2008, first as an elementary school teacher. She has also taught a math cohort called Culturally Responsive Mathematics to a group of educators through STFX university. Kyla has presented at provincial conferences, and multiple workshops. She has published math resources that are used across Canada, as well as developed her own to share over the years. She is looking forward to sharing her knowledge and elementary math expertise with all of our elementary teachers across the province, either virtually or in person. 

Miranda Bernard

Miranda Bernard started working for us as our Early Childhood Education Consultant in March of 2020. Miranda worked in the educational field for over 27 years. During her time with the Eskasoni School Board, she worked as a Student Support Worker and Guidance Counsellor before becoming the Day Care Director.
As part of the Language and Culture team, she is responsible to work with program Directors to drive the development of a comprehensive program aimed at enhancing children’s cognitive, spiritual, physical and emotional development. She will work with communities, principals, teachers, Directors of Education and other stakeholders. She will work with the teachers to implement age appropriate programming and collaborate as a team to deliver early learning programs in the communities.
