First, thank you for all that you have done to support our students throughout this very challenging school year. Your dedication to our students, and to teaching and learning is admirable.
As you may have heard, in the 2021-2022 school year, our grade 7 students will be participating in a pilot of our own culturally-responsive assessment designed to identify each student’s strengths and areas for improvement in the area of literacy. The reading, viewing, writing, listening, and speaking tasks and activities of the assessment, though based on the Outcomes of the English Language Arts 7 Renewed Curriculum, will be in keeping with Mi’kmaw ways of Being and Knowing, and will include Mi’kmaw short stories, poetry, information texts, visual media, and artifacts.
A small, dedicated team of our teachers has been working on the assessment since February – thank you, team! – and, this summer, teams of teachers will be meeting to continue the development of the assessment. Participants will be paid for their work.
If you have any questions about the assessment, or if you would like to participate in one of the teacher teams this summer, please contact me at ac.unik@nodlehs or (902) 574-4059.
