Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey hosts first ever Wellness Camps

During the summer of 2020, Rebecca Scirocco, Wellness Consultant, hosted Wellness camps in our communities across the province.

The main purpose for putting on the camps was to help students learn about the new safety measures they will be seeing this year as they return to school, and learning about ways to cope with stress.

The course size in each community was limited to ten students. The activities in most communities included outdoor activities, along with a craft and learning some mindfulness techniques to deal with stress and anxiety. The camps taught students about physical distancing and the importance of wearing a mask when you can’t. Hand washing was also a priority, and also learning about not sharing food.

“The summer Wellness Camps went very well,” said Rebecca Scirocco. “They were well-received by the participants and I was very impressed to see how prepared they already were with protocols in place for COVID-19.”

Camps were held in Annapolis Valley, Bear River, Sipekne’katik, Potlotek and Eskasoni. We would like to send a big thank you out to the communities for finding the space and helping to advertise the camps.
