Our Multimedia Support Coordinator Julien Strasfeld (BA) specializes in technology education and integration and is a photographer and filmmaker. He has previously worked as the Digital Media Specialist for the Chignecto-Central Virtual School and Technician and Sales representative at Laurier Computers in Ottawa. In recent years he has been doing contract work for MK and the Membertou Youth Centre. Julien is thrilled to join the MK team in a full-time capacity.
A skateboarder for over two decades, Julien promotes the benefits of skateboarding though local community advocacy and youth mentorship. In 2018, Julien co-founded Wild Town, a non-profit land-based healing and food education organization. Julien lives in New Waterford, Unama’ki where he volunteers at the local community garden, bakes sourdough bread, raises chickens, and keeps honeybees.
Sheila joined us back in February as our Elementary Literacy Consultant. She comes to us from Eskasoni where she worked as a teacher since the year 2000. Sheila began her work in education in the late 80’s when she was a member of the Eskasoni School Board. She went on to take her Bachelor of Arts (4 year) degree from Cape Breton University and her Bachelor of Education from St.FX. She also obtained her Master of Education (Curriculum /Diverse Cultures) degree from Mount Saint Vincent University. Since 2009, Sheila has been provided reading support for grades 1-6 at the Eskasoni Elementary and Middle School.
As part of the Academic Services team, she is responsible to encourage and promote early/elementary literacy best practices by coaching education staff in effective literacy practices and approaches, while building capacity and providing access to relevant and quality material to institutions in member communities.
Outside of Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey, Sheila enjoys spending time with family and friends and learning more about her own language and culture.
