September 2023 - Mi'kmaw Kina'matnewey Department Updates

October 6, 2023

This month we coordinated a trip to visit the petroglyphs with our Education Working Group and Principals Working Group. They loved having the opportunity to go out onto the rocks and are looking forward to planning opportunities to bring their students out to experience them as well.

Nitap Day was held on September 22. Our MK family of schools across the province celebrated friendship and so did we!

ECE

On Sept 19th over 80 Teachers, ECE, & EA's attended an online informational professional development about Jordan's Principal.

Elementary Math

Kyla Bernard, our Elementary Math Consultant has been very busy visiting communities and teachers.  There have been requests for IXL math licenses from teachers so she has added 4 new teachers and their students.

In the winter of 2023, the teachers who competed Graham Fletchers module "Foundations of Fractions" are receiving their classroom resources that are hands on, concrete and visual.  Kyla is looking forward to offering this again for 2023-2024.

Grade one teachers participated in a MK summer PD in Halifax this year and it was a great success.

Kyla's plans for fall include new Professional Development opportunities and more community visits.  She wants to send her thanks to all teachers for reaching out for math support. So far she has visited Potlotek, Wagmatcook, LSK, Eskasoni and Membertou and is looking forward to getting out to all communities as soon as possible.

Mi'kmaw Language

Our language team has been working on preparing for the upcoming year. We will be starting a new Mentor Apprentice group along with a Junior Mentor Apprentice group. There have also been new resources added to our website and professional development sessions planned for educators.

Treaty Education

The newest magazine for Treaty Ed has been released. It looks amazing! A digital copy can be found on our website.
