Indigenous Day in Veterinary Medicine

December 1, 2023

On November 17th and 18th, 2023 students from across Nova Scotia travelled to Charlottetown, PEI to attend Vet Camp: Indigenous Day in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Aspiring veterinarians, budding scientists and animal lovers in Grades 7 through 9 had the opportunity to see what kind of opportunities and challenges veterinarians face by spending the day learning from the professors, clinicians, staff and vet students of the Atlantic Veterinary College.

The students took part in a wide range of exciting hands-on experiences that provided a true-to-life glimpse into the world of veterinary medicine including:

  • Small animal medicine
  • Large animal medicine
  • Anatomy: structure and function
  • Microscopes and cells
  • Wildlife medicine
  • Animal behaviour
  • Animal welfare
  • Clinical procedures
  • Parasitology and toxicology
  • First aid for pets
  • Histology and radiology
  • Case studies

The students benefited from the depth and breadth of knowledge acquired during the visit and from visiting the UPEI campus and learning about the different career opportunities available to those studying veterinary medicine.
