“Reclaiming Indigenous Voice and Vision”

Thursday, June 1st, 2000

A new book edited by Dr. Marie Battiste is now available from UBC Press 1-800 668-0821, www.ubcpress.ubc.ca. In moving and inspiring ways, the book elaborates a new inclusive vision of a global and national order and articulates new approaches for protecting, healing, and restoring long-oppressed peoples, and for respecting their cultures and languages.

An In-service Awareness Session was held in Wagmatcook.

Thursday, June 1st, 2000

Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey staff members met and shared with educators from the Wagmatcook First Nation School on May 19. The in-service session followed a presentation seeking information from a special needs assessment worker and provided an opportunity to share concerns and to highlight the organization’s main activities. Providing grass-roots contact with member communities is a high priority. Schools that would like similar sessions are invited to contact the Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey offices.

Educators Support Native Student Activities

Thursday, June 1st, 2000

Dedicated educators continue to support educational activities by Native students.

There are three main initiatives that are designed to involve and motivate students. Those events include the Mi’kma’kik Mi’kmawisultimkewey Mawiomi (Mi’kmaw Speech Festival), Panwijkatekemkewey Mawiomi (Regional Science Fair), and a Fine Arts Festival. These educational opportunities result from the dedication and hard work of principals and teachers from participating schools.

During April, First Nation schools held their own Science Fairs. Winners from the schools in Pictou Landing, Wagmatcook, Waycobah, Membertou, Eskasoni, and Chapel Island then attended the Regional Science Fair held at the Waycobah First Nation Elementary School on April 27, 2000.
