Special Education Needs Explored
April 1st, 2000The Special Education Needs Committee is actively researching special education requirements of Native students in Nova Scotia.
“Special education needs” includes many special situations related to educational programming for those who are visually or hearing impaired, have mobility difficulties, or other special needs.Currently, the levels of support and funding in First Nation schools seem not to be on par with those in provincial schools. The research group is planning to make community visits in April and May 2000 in order to properly assess the needs in our communities. The committee will then be able to make informed recommendations in this important area.
Committee members pictured are from left to right, John Jerome Paul, Marian Paul, Lauren Furdas, Isabel DenHeyer, and Meredith Gillis. Committee members not pictured include Darren Googoo, Jean Knockwood, and Barry Evans. Ms. Cathy Martin of Restigouche also attended and shared information she has learned from doing similar work in her community.
